This full-day workshop is designed for parents, teachers and other professionals who work with students with HFA/AS and who have a working familiarity with the diagnosis. Over the course of the day, the following topics will be covered:
- Understanding how the diagnosis can impact the school day in social behavior, in social communication, in cognitive/learning differences, and in sensory issues.
- Learning how to thoughtfully respond to agitation, escalation and meltdowns with mostly proactive and some reactive techniques.
- Writing measurable IEP goals that target non-academic skill areas by using a variety of measurement techniques to track meaningful and informative data

Thoughtful Response to Agitation, Escalation and Meltdowns in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders
A half-day training by Rebecca Klaw
Agenda: This workshop will describe a way of understanding children with ASD that helps guide both proactive and, if necessary, reactive responses to escalating agitation. The premise of this presentation is that consequences don't always, or even often, work with individuals with ASD who are, by the nature of their diagnosis, easily frustrated and often inflexible.
Location: Urban Mountain Gathering Place in Mt. Washington
Cost: $30 for parents, $45 for professionals
Includes: 2 hours of training in a beautiful setting with a great view of Pittsburgh, free parking, handouts of the slides, 50% off coupon for DVD of this topic, plenty of discussion, good coffee and tea, home-made treats, and great company.
